In Memory ofAB COOK SUBMARINES JOHN DOUGLAS SIMOUNDS R64483![]() May He Rest In Peaceto announce the passing of former member John “Simmo” Simounds. Born in Maitland, South Australia, in May 1948, John enlisted in the Royal Australian Navy on 5 June 1965, serving for nine years. Following his recruit training at HMAS Cerberus, he was rated as an Ordinary Seaman Cook, with shore postings to HMAS Watson and to HMAS Rushcutter before joining the ASW frigate HMAS Yarra in January 1966. During his time on Yarra, John deployed to Vietnam, escorting the transport ship HMAS Sydney to Vung Tau. Upon completing his Ordinary Seaman service in January 1967, John was posted to HMAS Lonsdale and later returned to Cerberus to undertake his Cook’s Course. He qualified as a Cook in March 1967, at which time he was rated as a Cook 2nd Class, and was subsequently promoted to Cook (Able Seaman) in May. This was followed by a shore posting at HMAS Albatross before he volunteered for submarine service in 1968. John undertook his submarine training at HMS Dolphin in Gosport, United Kingdom, and served aboard the Royal Navy submarines HMS Alliance and HMS Astute, where he earned his submarine qualification. He later became part of the commissioning crew of HMAS Onslow and also served on HMAS Ovens, Otway, and Oxley before leaving the Navy. In 1971, John joined the Submarine Old Comrades Association of Australia, later transferring to the Submarines Association of Australia upon its formation. He was also a long-standing member of the Enfield, SA, RSL and served as a former President of the Port Adelaide Naval Association. John passed away on Saturday the 24th of May 2025, his funeral service will be held at the Acacia Chapel, Enfield Memorial Park, Adelaide, on 5 June at 10:45 AM.
